the only thing sadder and worse than international politics is sports politics….
Australia’s hopes of qualifying for Germany 2006 have been rocked as Oceania sensationally lost direct entry to the tournament, with FIFA deciding to limit the number of World Cup finalists to 32.
The Socceroos looked headed to the World Cup when Oceania was handed direct entry last December but FIFA has elected to hand half a spot back to South America at an executive meeting in Paris.
The fuckers from FIFA took it away from us. Last year the FIFA president, in a bid for re-election promised a full automatic qualification spot for Oceania for the World Cup in 2006, to be held in Germany. Oceania was the only confederation without a full spot – the winner of the confederation (almost always Australia) has had to playoff against otherwise inelligible teams from Asia or South America. Anyhoo, in making this stance, Blatter recieved every single vote from the Oceanic countries, which ultimately pushed him over the line to re-election. As expected, the spot was relinquised from South America, who already had 4 or 5 spots, and Oceania rejoiced at the prospect of finally seeing another World Cup.
Alas, this morning in a rather forseeable backflip FIFA voted to take back the spot given to Oceania, and lose any respect and decency I ever had for the organisation. So much for the world game.

No commentsSchool’s out!
Yay two weeks of holidays are upon me! Although, judging by my report today most of those will be locked up in my room, at the state library or at school trying to bring mediocrity to awesomeness.
I’m going off to Circus Oz tonight, before a nice long boozing session at a local party. Just what is needed to kill any brain cells gained/turned on from the last term of learning.

heheh it took me a whole week of being 18 before I put it to any real legal use… i know how sad.
In between school and JC rehearsals, I trundled off to get a hircut, but when I was turned away from the hairdresser, decided upon a walk up Chapel Street where I just happened to bump into Dan Murphys and came out $25 lighter, a bottle of Beam for tomorrow night heavier and with the second usage of legitimate ID since last week.
Ooooo tomorrow is the last day of school for the semester! CMON!

No commentsyeast and wimbledon… what a mix
holy crud. I couldn’t have picked a worse night to start yeasty stuff. It got down to 4 celsius (40 F?) last night, the coldest night for a long time, and my yeast almost died! Fortunately today next to a heater was enough to spur the good ol bacteria growth to crank up again. GO yeast!
In other news, wimbledon is starting to look less enticing through tonights half of the draw being bereft of aussies, and theres only 2 days left of school for the term! YAY!

1 commentbrew time!
I’ve decided tonight that I’m going to brew some beer at home. All I need is a nice big sealable bucket, some brewing stuff and bottles to put it in. I think I may just start out with an easy Ginger Beer, but the main reason for doing it is for real beer, and the copious amounts of good old fashioned brewing fun attributed to BEER.
Anyhoo hows that for impulsiveness? I think I’ll search the supermarket tomorrow for one of those big microbrew fermenters. They cost like 20 bucks, but are basically a big plastic urn. Should be fun….

Eh this shit is starting to tire me. All I wanted to do this weekend was finish Harry Potter and be happy. Alas, everytime I sat or lay down to start reading, I had to get up and do other shit. I ended up reading for about two hours over the entire weekend, for the meagre total of just over 200 pages read. It’s at least a good thing I read fast: there were friends who had finished it, but spent over 20 hours reading. Anyway, now I’ll have to wait until next weekend before I can afford to even touch it again – theres just too much on during the week to read for pleasure aswell.
Maths portfolio and TOK essay draft due tomorrow, ontop of a semi-impromtu Paper 2 exam in History. Only a week to go of this shit before holidays though…. sooo close.
Recieved an unexpected sms today, from no other than my Brookey, although I dunno if my replies got through to her. I wonder if shes back from the depths of hell or wherever else she was going for holidays. I think it was Idaho, but thats close enough to hell for all intents and purposes.
In other random news, the surfing trip in this entry fell through yesterday, I got a phone call from Dougie. And the SCUBA camp up to merimbula is booked out now too, so it looks as though I’m spending the entire holidays in Melbourne after all. Will have to find things to amuse me now. Oh well, theres always school work

3 Hours after the world embargo lifted! I had been playing sport since then, so midday was the first opportunity I had. It was awesome, I was one of the last to get my hands on the book in the local dymocks, and only got it because I pre-ordered it a couple of months ago. It seems Dymocks underestimated how popular it was – they had been so inundated with orders in the last couple of weeks that they blew thier quota last week, and so only people that ordered it can get it before tomorrow. Anyhoo, there were about 30 copies behind the counter when I got there, and… well here it is! UK coverart aswell; so much better than the yank cover. Anyway I have to either finish it this weekend or I won’t finish it for weeks and weeks, so I better get reading.

I’m an adult!
Today I turned 18. I can now vote for my country (or rather I have to), die for my country and drink myself stupid LEGALLY! Oh and drive. Kinda silly rules, introducing legal alcohol and cars at the same age.
Anyhoo I woke up late this morning, treating myself to a sleepin, and when I did emerge downstairs my family pounced on me and wished me all the best. They also gave me pressies then, which is very unlike what our family normally does. It’s always been an evening thing for presents and the like, excepting chrissie. Anyhoo I opened the two up. The first was unexciting; a seemingly link cable between firewire and usb. Although this intrigued me, I knew firewire was only used for high speed stuff like dv cams, so I moved to the bigger box eagerly. This is where it trips out.
Brookey’s birthday is also on June the 19th, and last week she recieved, to my envy an iPod mp3 player, and yet when I opened this box, guess what was inside!!!!
Here it is, playing good ol’ Harper:

Anyway as you can see, muchos happy. Thanks for all the birthday wishes, they mean a lot, especially when they come from Newcastlians, are in the mail form and include lollies!

2 commentsFarewell, sweet youth
So this will be the last post of an adolescent Pete.
In 81 minutes, June 19 starts and I turn 18. ooooooooo. Maybe you can expect some more seriousness in the entries, or a more sombre moodset in my writing. Afterall, we all have to grow up sometime, right? *laughs hysterically* As you can guess, thats highly unlikely of happening anytime soon.
However things I didn’t expect and kind of suck did pop up. Apparently the bank starts to charge me for transactions from now on, and the family’s insurance company sent me a letter saying that as an adult I either have to take out seperate health insurance or claim dependant student status and stay under the family plan. Considering I’m still at home, you can guess what I’ll take out. For tomorrow, I’ve just asked for a normal family dinner, although mum’s going to set up the dining room and all. Oh well. I’ve also set up a pub outing at lunch time, and I’ve got a liscense test booked next week for my P’s. Should be crazy-go-nuts!
Anyway, farewell youth,
Pete
